Newspapers and magazines wrote glowing articles about this “miracle” of modern medicine, and, in 1949, fourteen years after its introduction, its inventor, Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz, was awarded a Nobel Prize. That therapy, of course, was prefrontal lobotomy.
